It began on a bitterly cold day in 1969 with a stale donut and Captain Robert Douglas’s disappointment at finding no year‑round restaurant on the Vineyard. He sketched a small gambrel‑roofed building on a napkin—an idea that became a waterfront gathering place at the head of Vineyard Haven Harbor. Townsfolk helped build it, shared beloved recipes, and when it was finished, he named it after his loyal dog, Black Dog.

Not much has changed. The view remains beautiful, our chefs still serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner year‑round using the finest ingredients, and The Black Dog Tavern continues to offer a charming waterfront setting for weddings, parties, luncheons, and special events.
